My mind has been all consumed by grammar recently!

My daughter had an adenoidectomy today, plus another (her fourth) set of ear tubes. I’ve had questions about why and how we made this choice - some of you remember we had this surgery scheduled and then cancelled it! I’ve also had questions about myofuntional therapy, which goes hand-in-hand with the symptoms and what we are trying to resolve. SO, these are her symptoms:

▫️Hyponasality (watch my video from 4 weeks ago to hear it)
▫️Mouth breathing
▫️Chronic congestion and cold-like symptoms
▫️Chronic ear infections

We held off on this surgery for a good 6 months in the hopes that her symptoms would resolve, but they didn’t. We will still be continuing with her daily sinus rinses and myofunctional exercises!

Her surgeon found significantly retracted ear drums and thick fluid in the middle ear…This is something to keep an eye on, and she already has another audiology exam in a few weeks. The surgeon also found she has a deviated septum - which could be contributing to the mouth breathing!

Adenoids are tissue masses located high on the posterior wall of the pharynx. When they become swollen, the airway can become blocked, resulting in hyponasal speech and mouth breathing. It can also affect the Eustachian tubes.

Cleft-affected children usually have a partial adenoidectomy since a surgery risk is VPI. Surgeons do this by leaving a bit of the adenoid towards the bottom, where the soft palate is located.

SENSORY BOTTLES • I like sensory bottles because

SENSORY BOTTLES • I like sensory bottles because you can have sensory play without the mess + it’s a safe way to play with small items. I use Voss water bottles and superglue the tops on.

▫️REINFORCER: Sensory bottles are novel and engaging. Even use it as a conversational piece or a way to build rapport.

▫️ CALM DOWN BOTTLES: Give a child something constructive to do while self-regulating. Create a bottle with thicker liquids, such as glitter glue, hair gel, and oil. Shake or turn the bottle upside down and watch the contents settle while taking deep breaths.

▫️LANGUAGE: Work on core vocabulary such as “go” and “stop”. Describe what is inside by colors, textures, sizes, shapes. Target basic concepts, expanding sentences with these descriptors, and WH questions.

▫️ARTICULATION: Create an “I spy” bottle. Fill the bottle with small items of your target sound or multisyllabic words.

▫️FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS/SEQUENCING/RETELL: Create a sensory bottle in therapy. Incorporate sequencing, following multi-step directions, and descriptive language. After they have completed they can retell the steps!
