Farm Themed Speech Therapy Activities

I enjoy using themes in my speech sessions because it helps streamline therapy planning. A farm theme is great for speech therapy because of all these speech-language concepts you can target!

Farm Themed Speech-Language Targets

  1. Early sounds – Many farm animal sounds use early speech sounds /m, p, b, d/ as well as beginning sound combinations (e.g. CV, VC, CVCV). For example, “moo” “baa baa” “cow” “eat” “up” “neigh”.
  2. Animal vocabulary – Teach and practice animal names and associated actions, sounds, and adjectives. Compare and contrast animals with tables or Venn diagrams to help build vocabulary.
  3. Descriptive language – Learn descriptive words for animals and objects on the farm (e.g., furry, noisy, tall).
  4. Prepositions – Work on spatial concepts with a farm! You can place the animals behind, in front, next to, in, on, etc.
  5. Wh-questions – Use farm-themed Wh-questions to practice comprehension and expression skills.
  6. Following Directions – Give directions involving farm animals or objects (e.g., “Put the horse in the barn,” “Find the cow that goes ‘moo.'”) Follow multi-step directions to perform actions related to farm tasks (e.g., “First, plant the seeds. Then, water the plants.”)
  7. Categorization – Sort and categorize farm animals based on attributes like size, habitat, or type (e.g., mammals, birds.) Group farm-related vocabulary into categories (e.g., animals, tools, buildings.)
  8. Storytelling – Sequence the steps of planting and growing crops or taking care of animals on the farm. Practice retelling a farm-themed story using beginning, middle, and end concepts.
  9. Articulation practice – Use animal names to practice specific speech sounds or to target specific sounds in sentences.
  10. Conversation skills – Discuss your favorite farm animals or equipment and explain why. Use conversation prompts to practice generalizing articulation sounds and practicing fluent speech.
