Functional life skills are essential to teach in speech therapy and special education. They include any skills that are necessary for a person to live independently, such as self-care and safety. Here are several speech therapy functional life skills activities to download and use now!

Functional Life Skills Speech Therapy Activities

Personal Hygiene – Hands-on activities to teach, generalize, and self-assess personal hygiene. Great for all ages: teach younger children about hygienic items and their uses. Teen hygienic items are also included, along with sequences for older chores such as laundry, and checklists for hygiene self-regulation. Personal hygiene activities include a social story, flipbook, flash cards, dice game, bathroom interactive scene, personal hygiene routines, sequencing match up activities, and more!

“All About Me” Personal Information – Help students with the critical life skill of knowing their personal information. Includes 2 flipbooks: one for elementary aged students, and one for middle and high school aged students. Also includes 2 sets of personal information cards: one for younger students and one for teens. Use the cards to simplify learning the answers to several important life skills questions, such as “What is your name?” and “What is your phone number?”

Fire Safety – A hands-on interactive book to work on fire safety incorporating language skills! Activities include a fire safety search, sequencing activities for if there is a fire, fire safety wh questions, and much more.

Bathroom Life Skills – Target many expressive and receptive language goals with this fun interactive book. Learn vocabulary for items in a bathroom, along with object function. Includes routines and sequencing activities for hand washing and teeth brushing. Find the digital version here.

Laundry Life Skills – Teach students about laundry routines with this engaging, interactive book. Activities include directions for prepositions, sequencing, vocabulary, and object function, as well as association match-up. Also available in digital format.

Kitchen Life Skills – This interactive book introduces kitchen safety and other essential life skills in the kitchen. Use this book to target vocabulary, object function, prepositions, categories, and sequencing. Digital version is also available.

Bedroom Life Skills – Functional life skills worksheets and special education activities. Target many language skills with this fun, bedroom-themed interactive book. Target vocabulary, inferences, categories, and following directions. Digital version is available here.

When teaching phonemic awareness, DON’T add add a schwa to the end of the sound! For example, the first sound in “feet” is /f/ not /fʌ/. Not adding a trailing “uhhh” sound is critical because when a child is learning to blend and segment words to read, they will pronounce the word “fuheetuh.”

It feels natural to add a schwa to the end of a consonant...but don’t dooo it!
