30 Social Emotional Books for Kids

Books are a great way to discuss and teach social emotional concepts in your speech therapy sessions, at home, or in your classrooms.

We can incorporate social emotional learning into our speech therapy sessions no matter the therapy goals being addressed! Social emotional learning is a key part of child development. These critical skills allow a child to express their emotions appropriately, and demonstrate self-control, empathy, kindness, perspective-taking, cooperation, flexibility, and more.

Incorporating books into speech therapy offers a multitude of benefits for individuals of all ages. First, books provide a structured framework for language learning, offering clear contexts and narratives that aid comprehension and engagement. Through reading aloud and discussing the content, SLPs can target various speech and language goals, such as articulation, phonological awareness, vocabulary expansion, and sentence structure. Books also serve as valuable tools for promoting literacy skills. Additionally, the diverse range of topics and genres found in books allows therapists to tailor sessions to individual interests and needs, ensuring personalized and effective intervention.

Books are a great way to work on these essential social and emotional skills! Use books to discuss character development, how they responded in different situations, what they could have done differently – even use them to roleplay!
